Penguins: Crosby dealing with neck injury (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Sidney Crosby isn't just dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion. A California doctor says the Pittsburgh Penguins' star also is recovering from a neck injury.

Crosby visited with neurological spine specialist Dr. Robert S. Bray in Los Angeles this week as he continues treatment for symptoms that resurfaced during a loss to Boston on Dec. 5.

While Crosby initially said he didn't sustain a concussion against the Bruins, the team says Bray diagnosed Crosby with one and also discovered an unspecified neck injury, though Bray told the team the neck injury is "fully healed."

Crosby missed more than 10 months after sustaining head shots in consecutive games in early January 2011. He returned on Nov. 21 and had 12 points in eight games before the symptoms resurfaced following a physical game against the Bruins.

The team said Bray's findings will be evaluated by independent specialists.

General manager Ray Shero said at the All-Star game in Ottawa that Crosby had returned from California and that he was "optimistic" Crosby will play again this season.

"He's back in Pittsburgh now, hopefully we'll see next week where he is and we'll get the reports from California and compare notes to what's been done so far," Shero said.

The Canadian web site sportsnet.ca, citing unidentified sources, reported Crosby visited with a doctor in Utah, where an MRI revealed an abnormality in two vertebrae in Crosby's neck.

Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, did not immediately return a request for comment from The Associated Press.

The 24-year-old Crosby acknowledged earlier this month he was still experiencing headaches and motion problems. He traveled to Atlanta recently to visit with Dr. Ted Carrick, a chiropractic neurologist who successfully treated Crosby last summer.

Crosby has been cleared for light exercise and skated with his teammates during a road trip through Florida two weeks ago.

The Penguins entered the All-Star break on a seven-game winning streak. Pittsburgh returns to practice Monday and will host Toronto on Tuesday night.

The team has stressed Crosby will not play until he is ready.

"The thing with Sidney is we want to continue to look to see how we can get this under control and manageable so he can return to play," Shero said. "As I said before he's not (playing) until those symptoms resolve but hopefully have him back at some point here soon."

Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 27: Frequency, Steam Mobile, RAGE HD update, Baseball Superstars 2012 (Appolicious)

Start your weekend with all the best videos the Internet has to offer with Frequency, an iPad app that makes finding and organizing great videos from all over the place a snap. It?s our top Fresh App today, followed by Steam Mobile, an iOS app that ties to the popular digital video game download portal and lets you impulse-buy during Steam?s crazy game sales no matter where you are. A big update with new levels to RAGE HD tops off our games picks for this weekend, followed by a new, free edition to the Baseball Superstars series from Gamevil.

You might think of Frequency as a kind of Pandora for video. The app makes it easy to find and watch videos from a variety of sources right on your iPad, but what?s better is that it will create customized channels for you based on your preferences. You can create channels based on your favorite sites, on specific topics and trends, or even just a running list of what your friends are sharing on Facebook and Twitter.

Frequency makes it easy to group videos into channels and see everything you want quickly and easily, but it also helps you search through all that information for the best bits. The app will pull highlights from all your channels that you can flip through more quickly, keep you up to date on trends and allow you to find things you?re already following quickly with its TUNER feature. It also includes AirPlay support, which means you can watch your videos on your other iOS devices, including Apple TV.

An iOS tie-in to the uber-popular online video game distribution, Steam allows PC gamers the ability to access their accounts on the portal, talk to friends, view games and trailers ? basically everything they can do with the Steam PC app, except for the part about playing video games. But you can still shop for them and purchase them to be digitally downloaded on your computer when you return to it.

Steam lets you search for games, see new releases, read about titles and watch their trailers, all from your iOS device. You can buy games for yourself or for friends, or add them to your ?wishlist? for later (or to encourage people to give you gifts). You?ll need a Steam account to access your account through the app, and the system is currently still in beta, so you?ll need to wait for developer Valve to send you an invite. But downloading the app and signing-in puts you on Valve?s list of interested users, which might help fast-track your beta invite.

Last year, id Software released RAGE HD as an iOS title to go along with its first-person shooter, also titled RAGE. The iOS version contains some slick graphics and great shooter controls, making use of both the touchscreen and the built-in gyroscope to make aiming your weapons feel natural. A ?rail shooter,? RAGE takes care of the movement in the game (it?s as if you were on a rollercoaster), while you do the shooting.

A big update has just dropped for the title, bringing new content to iOS players. RAGE HD contains two new levels to work through, filled with pesky, murderous mutants. Those levels can be downloaded through in-app purchase, and the game now supports HDMI output so you can play on your TV and iOS 5. It?s also received a host of bug fixes to tighten up the experience.

Gamevil?s yearly update to its cartoonish home run-hitting baseball title has gone freemium in Baseball Superstars 2012, but the core of the game will keep fans of the long-running series happy. Like other titles in the Baseball Superstars series, you?ll manage your team and play against others, both computer controlled and online, where you?ll do the pitching and the hitting for your team.

Baseball Superstars 2012 features HD graphics and online play that allows you to take on other players as well as trade your baseball team members with your friends. It also features a story campaign you can work through on your own with multiple endings, and Game Center support for achievements and leaderboards.

Delphi Automotive 4Q profit, revenue climbs | Washington Examiner

Vehicle parts maker Delphi Automotive PLC said Thursday its profit climbed in the fourth quarter as revenue rose 7 percent thanks to rising global auto production and the company's strong growth in Europe and Asia.

Delphi makes transmission controls, heating and air conditioning systems and other components. It said its profit grew to $290 million, or 88 cents per share, from $75 million, or 11 cents per share in the year-ago period.

The big jump in earnings per share resulted partly from the company having 328 million shares outstanding in the latest period, compared to 687 million in the year-ago period.

Revenue rose 7 percent, to $3.9 billion from $3.65 billion.

Analysts expected Delphi Automotive to post a profit of 56 cents per share and $3.9 billion in revenue, according to estimates compiled by FactSet.

The company also said its board of directors approved up to $300 million for the repurchase of common shares by Dec. 31.

Delphi was spun off from General Motors in 1999. It went into bankruptcy protection in 2005, and emerged four years later after cutting thousands of jobs and selling plants and businesses. It launched an initial public stock offering in November.

Delphi's annual profit nearly doubled in 2011, growing to $1.15 billion, or $2.72 per share, from $631 million, or 92 cents per share. Its revenue increased 16 percent, to $16.04 billion from $13.82 billion.

The company forecast a profit of $3.44 to $3.69 per share for 2012, and said its revenue will be between $16.2 billion and $16.5 billion. That estimate includes net income of 83 cents to 96 cents per share in the first quarter, on $4 billion to $4.1 billion in revenue.

Analysts expect Delphi Automotive to report a profit of $3.50 per share and $16.56 billion in revenue for the full year, and 92 cents per share on revenue of $4.09 billion in the first quarter.

Shares of Delphi Automotive rose 10 cents to $26.05 in aftermarket trading following the release of the earnings report. They ended the regular session up 19 cents at $25.95.

UK judge: Social network sites differ from press (AP)

LONDON ? The British judge presiding over a wide-ranging inquiry into media ethics and practices has suggested that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter should be seen differently than traditional publishers.

Lord Justice Brian Leveson said Thursday that there was a distinction between what he described as "pub chatter" between friends on such sites and organizations which publish material for public consumption.

Leveson's inquiry was set up in the wake of Britain's phone hacking scandal and has the power to recommend far-reaching changes to the way the country's media are regulated.

The judge also is considering whether nontraditional forms of media, such as blogs, should be submitted to any eventual new rules.

Is moon base really the 'weirdest' Newt Gingrich idea? Maybe not.

Newt Gingrich once wrote a bill that proposed to clarify when a moon base could apply for statehood. He admitted the bill was a bit odd Wednesday. But it might now prove to be a stroke of brilliance.?

Newt Gingrich wants to establish a colony on the moon, in case you haven?t heard. At a campaign stop on Florida?s Space Coast Thursday he promised that the US would have a permanent lunar base by the end of his second term in the Oval Office.

He talked about it as if it would be a lunar Plymouth, mankind?s brave foray into a lunar unknown, though he himself did not make that direct comparison. He even put out some ideas as to how the place should be governed.

When Moon Base Gingrich holds enough people, it should apply for statehood, he said.

?I think the moon primary would come late in the [campaign] season,? he said, smiling. This was either hubristic or charmingly self-aware, depending on how one views the prospect of the former speaker in the White House.

As Gingrich noted Wednesday, he?s outlined his ideas for space self-government before. As a young member of Congress in 1981, he introduced a bill he now refers to as the Northwest Ordinance for Space, but back then went by the more prosaic name of National Aeronautics and Space Policy Act of 1981.

BuzzFeed has dug up an actual copy of this legislation from the Library of Congress, and it?s pretty interesting. Much of it consists of an order to NASA to set 30-year goals for everything from a new ?operational world information system? (Newt invented the Internet!) to manned Mars and moon missions.

Title IV covers ?Government of Space Territories.? It begins in a sweeping manner: all persons residing in any US space community (which could be anywhere from the moon to Jupiter, we guess) ?shall be entitled to the protection of the Constitution of the United States.?

Wow ? this means that any terror suspect caught at a US moon base couldn?t be shipped to Guant?namo, right? Also, any baby born to an illegal US moon base immigrant would be a US citizen, raising the possibility of moon birth tourism.

The second section of Title IV says that when a US space colony holds 20,000 people, it will be able to hold a convention to establish a constitution and form of self-government for itself. Kind of like Philadelphia in 1787, only with external oxygen supplies.

Title IV?s third section establishes that whenever said space colony holds the same number of people as the least populous US state (right now, that?s Wyoming, at 544,270) it will be admitted as a US state ?on an equal footing with the original states.?

That raises a question ? if you?re the senator from the moon, would you get in trouble with constituents for not traveling home often enough to take the pulse of Tranquility Base? Because you probably couldn?t do that Friday-to-Monday.

Anyway, Gingrich himself kind of poked fun at himself for all this, saying that he?s old enough to have read ?Missiles & Rockets Magazine? as a kid, and that the whole thing might be the ?weirdest? policy idea he?s ever proposed.

But let?s be honest ? he?s running a Florida primary, and Florida?s Space Coast right now suffers from high unemployment. Gingrich might be crazy like a space fox here.?

Slate?s Dave Weigel wrote about Gingrich?s speech under the head ?Not Actually Crazy.?

?It?s an idea that makes the New York/Washington-Alinskyite media guffaw. It also happens to be a pander to local voters that no one will try to make,? wrote Mr. Weigel.

After all, in the late 1960s, NASA drew up plans to establish a moon base by 1980 and send men to Mars by 1983. But these were cancelled by then-President Richard Nixon, notes Space.com in an outline of presidential visions for space exploration.

Nixon was worried that the government spending was too high ? and NASA was a convenient target.

(AP) ? Penn State security had to turn away mourners as viewing hours for the late Joe Paterno ended Wednesday after thousands of students, alumni and admirers had filed past the football coach's closed casket to pay their respects.

The second of three days of events for Paterno was to culminate with a private funeral service and his burial in the afternoon. Penn State will host a public memorial on Thursday at its basketball arena.

The outpouring of support for the Hall of Fame coach was huge, with hundreds of people lined up outside a campus spiritual center throughout the morning in temperatures around freezing. Members of Penn State's rugby team handed out hot chocolate and took donations for the Special Olympics and the student run dance marathon fundraiser ? the two organizations Paterno's family requested receive donations in lieu of flowers.

Paterno served as head coach for 46 years and won two national titles before being fired last November in the wake of child sex-abuse scandal involving a former assistant.

The last few months have been emotionally wrenching for the school's students and alumni, but mourners over the past two days have focused on the inspiration Paterno provided to them, his accomplishments both on and off the field and his philanthropy.

First in line Wednesday was David Brown, who left his home in Greensburg at midnight and drove more than two hours to State College then prepared to wait a few hours outside until the doors opened.

"I wouldn't have been surprised if there were 1,000 people here," he said.

Behind him was John Myers, 70, who drove more than two hours from Tamaqua to arrive at 5 a.m. ? three hours before the viewing was scheduled to begin.

"It's worth it," Myers said. "Joe was one of the best, if not the best, football coaches ever."

The 85-year-old Paterno died Sunday of lung cancer. He had been ousted just days before learning of his diagnosis. Paterno's son, Scott, has said his father was not bitter and remained upbeat until the end of his life.

Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator at the center of the abuse scandal, has been charged with molesting 10 boys over a period of 15 years. He has pleaded not guilty and is on bail, awaiting trial. Paterno was criticized in the days after Sandusky's arrest for not going to authorities outside campus when he was told of an allegation against the retired assistant in 2002.

Admirers put the case aside.

Tom Haack, a small business owner from Camp Hill, took off work to pay his respects to Paterno. The 59-year-old Haack said he chose Penn State to get his master's degree in business in the late 1980s, partly due to his admiration for the coach.

"His ethics, doing things the right way, excellence in everything you do, all of that attracted me and attracted many others to Penn State," he said. "I think his influence made it a better school and helped make it what it is today."

Thousands waited in line Tuesday on an overcast winter afternoon for the first day of visitation at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, where Paterno family members regularly attend services.

Inside the hall, the coach's body lay in a brown hardwood casket topped by a spray of white roses. About six feet away sat a stylized black-and-white picture of the man who became lovingly known on campus as "JoePa," smiling and peering out through his trademark thick-rimmed glasses.

Paterno's casket had an "honor guard" of two Penn State players ? one past and one present. Some mourners stopped for a moment of reflection, or to genuflect in the interfaith hall.

Others fought back tears and sniffles. The only other sounds were the occasional clicks of news photographers taking pictures.

Paterno won 409 ? a record for major college football ? in a career admired by peers as much for its longevity as its success. Paterno also took as much pride in the program's graduation rates, often at or close to the top of the Big Ten.

"The passion, the love that he gave almost gave you a sense that you wanted to give it back to him," Penn State men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers said after escorting his team to the worship hall Tuesday evening. "We're forever indebted to him and we will continue to work as hard as we can."

Four friends got in line at 6:30 a.m. to pay their respects, going up to the casket as a group to say goodbye.

"It's hard to say goodbye to somebody that you feel you've known all along," said John Whitney, a 21-year-old junior from Sparta, N.J. "A lot of us have never met him, but he's had such a big influence on everybody's life around here."

Heather Hoffman, a 19-year-old sophomore from Marlton, N.J., cited Paterno's contributions to academics along with athletics.

"It was time for all of us to pay tribute to him and give thanks because we're all here in part because of him," Hoffman said.

Karen Gilchrist, a Penn State fan from Scranton, brought three of her five children to the viewing. Seven-year-old Tiffany and 8-year-old Johnny both wore rolled-up khaki pants and black sneakers in honor of Paterno.

"There's going to be no one like him in my lifetime or theirs," said Gilchrist, cradling the third child, 6-month-old Valentina. "I wanted them to be part of a historic day. I felt compelled."

Mexico authorities unravel child trafficking ring (AP)

ZAPOPAN, Mexico ? The Irish couples ensnared in an apparent illegal adoption ring in western Mexico thought they were involved in a legal process and are devastated by allegations organizers were trafficking in children, the families said Monday.

"All the families have valid declarations to adopt from Mexico as issued by the Adoption Authority of Ireland," they said in a statement, which was read over the phone to The Associated Press by their lawyer in Mexico, Carlos Montoya.

Prosecutors in Mexico contend the traffickers tricked destitute young Mexican women trying to earn more for their children and childless Irish couples desperate to become parents.

For 15-year-old Karla Zepeda, the story began in August when a woman came to her dusty neighborhood of cinderblock homes and dirt roads looking for babies to photograph for an anti-abortion ad campaign.

Zepeda told the AP that the woman, Guadalupe Bosquez, asked to use her 9-month-old daughter Camila in a two-week photo shoot for $755 ($10,000 pesos), a small fortune for a teen mother who earns $180 a month at a sandwich stand and shares a cramped, one-story house with her disabled mother, stepfather, and three brothers.

Bosquez later returned with another woman, Silvia Soto, and gave her half the money as they picked the child up. She got the rest two weeks later when they brought Camila home.

"They showed me a poster that showed my girl with other babies and said 'No To Abortion, Yes To Life,'" said Zepeda, a petite teenager cleaning her house to loud norteno music. "I thought it was legal because everything seemed very normal."

Before long, the message spread to her neighbors. Seven other women, most between the ages of 15 and 22, agreed to let their babies be part of the ad campaign. Some already had several children. Some were single mothers. Two of them didn't know how to read or write. Five of them told they AP that they did not even have birth certificates for their babies when they came across Bosquez and Soto.

One said she needed money to pay for her child's medical care. All deny agreeing to give their children up for adoption.

But instead of just posing for photographs, Jalisco state investigators say Camila and other babies were left for weeks at a time in the care of Irish couples who had come to Mexico thinking they were adopting the children.

Camila and nine other children have been turned over to state officials who suspect they were being groomed for illegal adoptions. And authorities hint that far more children could be involved: Lead investigator Blanca Barron told reporters the ring may have been operating for 20 years, though she gave no details. Prosecutors also say four of the children show signs of sexual abuse, though they didn't say how or by whom.

Nine people have been detained, including Bosquez and Soto, but no one has yet been charged.

At least 15 Irish citizens have been questioned, the Jalisco state attorney general's office said, but officials have not released their names and their lawyer says all have returned to Ireland after spending weeks or months in Ajijic, a town of cobblestone streets and gated communities 37 miles (60 kilometers) away, trying to meet requirements for adopting a child. None was detained.

In their statement, the Irish couples said they would not comment further because of the ongoing investigation.

The Mexican mothers say that Bosquez and Soto persuaded three of them to register their children as single mothers so they could participate in the anti-abortion campaign, even though they live with the children's fathers.

Children's rights activists say that also could have made it easier to release the child for adoption: only the mother's signature would be needed.

The mothers were assured that the babies were being taken care of by several nannies and checked by doctors. The children often returned home wearing new clothes.

Some of the mothers said they began having second thoughts. But when they declined to send their children back, they say, Bosquez and Soto insisted they would have to pay for the strollers, car seats, diaper bags and everything else they had bought for the babies.

"We're going through a nightmare," said Fernanda Montes, an 18-year-old housewife who said she took part to pay a $670 hospital bill from the birth of her 3-month-old. "How could we have trusted someone so evil?"

The plan began to unravel on Jan. 9, when local police detained 21-year-old Laura Carranza and accused her of trying to sell her 2-year-old daughter.

Investigators said Carranza denied that allegation, but acknowledged she was "renting" her 8-month-old son. She then led authorities to Bosquez and Soto.

Both are now being held on suspicion they ran the alleged anti-abortion ad campaign as a front for an illegal adoption ring. It was not clear if they have attorneys and they have not yet been brought before a judge to say if they accept or reject the allegations.

Carranza is also being held, as is Karla's mother, Cecilia Velazquez, who hasn't worked since she lost both legs in a traffic accident in 2010. Karla says her mother's only fault was agreeing to the ad campaign.

Seven of the mothers interviewed told the AP that the children had most recently been picked up by Bosquez and Soto between Dec. 27 and Dec. 30 for an alleged photo shoot. They returned the babies on Jan. 9 and 10, saying "there had been problems." The mothers said they didn't notice anything wrong with the babies or any signs of abuse.

Then state police investigators showed up at their homes and drove them and their children to the police department for questioning. The babies were taken from them and put into state protective custody. The women complained that only four of them have been allowed to see their babies since, and only once.

A statement from Jalisco state prosecutors' said authorities seized Carranza's two children from her and the other seven while they were with the Irish couples. Prosecutors didn't respond to requests by the AP to clarify the discrepancy.

Residents of Ajijic, a town on the shore of Lake Chapala favored by American and Canadian retirees, say Irish citizens looking to adopt Mexican children began appearing there at least four years ago.

Jalisco state prosecutors' spokesman Lino Gonzalez said none of the Irish had been charged with a crime.

Even if they had adopted the children, Ireland might not have accepted them because the adoptions were handled privately, said Frances FitzGerald, Ireland's minister for children.

"Obviously, for any couple caught up in this, it's a nightmare scenario," she said.

"What you can't have in Mexico is people going to local agencies or individuals doing private adoptions because when they come back, there is going to be a difficulty."

Prosecutors say they have been trying without success to reach the attorneys who were handling the adoption paperwork in the neighboring state of Colima.

Custody release statements signed by all of the mothers carry the logo of Lopez y Lopez Asociados, a firm owned by Carlos Lopez Valenzuela and his son, Carlos Lopez Castellanos. Authorities raided their home last week.

The release statements were shown to the AP by a local advocate for missing and stolen children, Juan Manuel Estrada of Fundacion FIND, who said they had been leaked to him by a state official. He said Lopez Valenzuela had separately sent him a lengthy statement by email declaring that he too may have been duped in the case and denying wrongdoing.

Prosecutors wouldn't confirm the authenticity of his statement to Fundacion FIND, but it mirrors the stories of seven mothers who were interviewed by the AP.

Lopez didn't respond to emailed interview requests from the AP.

The Irish couples told authorities they found Lopez Valenzuela through a website advertising his services, according to their lawyer, Carlos Montoya.

He said they were charged $6,000 for the search for a baby, $13,600 to gain final custody and $5,000 in legal fees, as well as the biological mother's supposed prenatal care, hospital care and nanny services.

The babies stayed with the couples in Ajijic for weeks at a time. Several of the couples had adopted Mexican children in the past with Lopez Valenzuela and hadn't had any problems, he said.

"They are innocent people who were swindled by the lawyer managing the adoptions," he said.

They all returned to Ireland last week on his advice, he said.

HBT: Eckstein retires from baseball at 37

It?s a sad day for scrappiness.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, veteran infielder David Eckstein has decided to retire from baseball ?even though there were teams willing to bring him to camp? on a minor league contract.

Eckstein, 37, will finish up with a .280/.345/.355 career batting line. The 5-foot-6 shortstop and second baseman was named an All-Star twice and won the World Series MVP in 2006 after going 8-for-22 (.364) with three doubles, a walk and four RBI in the Cardinals? five-game victory over the Tigers.

Eckstein played for St. Louis, Anaheim, San Diego, Arizona and Toronto during his 10-year MLB career.

UPDATE: Eckstein?s agent denied Cafardo?s report, telling Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com that his client is willing to comtinue his playing career ?if the right opportunity arises.?

G-Shock prototype phone hides its craggy looks at CES, only fears your stares

Like your phones tough? Casio's apparently crafted another hardy device and this one appears to be running Android Gingerbread. The unnamed device can handle ten-foot drops and ten meters of water, while scaring small children at the same time. Hiding under a bridge somewhere in Las Vegas, it somehow avoided our patrols of the CES showfloor. The rubberized smartphone holds on to those G-Shock looks, with nubs mimicking the layout of Casio's ubiquitous digital watch. Aside from the super-tough credentials emblazoned on the back of the device, other specs remain unknown. MyNavi reports that the device remains a concept at the moment, although Casio still seems more than happy to show off the phone on its Facebook page. Interested in another option besides those smartphone-friendly G-Shocks? You can peruse the source for a full gallery of the hardware.

Brady gets helps from defense, Cundiff (AP)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ? Imagine this: The New England Patriots make yet another Super Bowl, and Tom Brady is not the main reason.

By his own assessment, Brady wasn't very good in the Patriots' 23-20 AFC championship game victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Vintage Brady doesn't need much assistance in such settings, but he got plenty of it from the Patriots' much-maligned defense, and from Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff shanking a 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Oh, yeah, Brady's 1-yard touchdown dive in which he soared over the Ravens' touted defensive line, provided the winning points with 11:29 remaining.

"In some ways, you always beat yourself up," Brady said after throwing for 239 yards, with two interceptions and, for the first time in 36 games, no TD passes. "I've been doing this for quite a while. I'm glad we won, I'm glad we're moving on. Hopefully I can go out there and do better in a few weeks."

That would be on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis in a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl ? Brady and coach Bill Belichick's only loss in the big game after three wins: a 17-14 shocker at the hands of the New York Giants when the Patriots were going for a perfect season. New England opened as a 3-point favorite against New York (12-7), which won at San Francisco 20-17 in overtime.

The Patriots probably wouldn't have won their 10th straight game overall ? the last loss was to the Giants in Foxborough ? if not for their defense's newfound stinginess. New England (15-3) ranked 31st in defense this season, but played just as well as Baltimore's highly rated unit for most of Sunday.

The Patriots shut down Ray Rice, the league's total yardage leader, who was limited to 78 yards. Brandon Spikes made a fourth-quarter interception of Joe Flacco, who played well before that and threw for two touchdowns. And when the Ravens were threatening to score a late touchdown to win their first conference title in 11 years, New England clamped down.

It's most critical play came from backup cornerback Sterling Moore, who stripped Lee Evans of the ball on what could have been a winning TD catch in the dying moments. Cundiff, an All-Pro kicker in 2010, then botched his kick.

"Child-like joy. It's all about child-like joy," linebacker Jerod Mayo said. "Last night felt like the day before Christmas for me and I haven't had that feeling in a long time. At this level, the day before Christmas is like a regular day. But now I just feel like I got my present."

Brady waited out the final tense minutes on the sideline, and then celebrated with the rest of his team when Cundiff's attempt went wide left. The Ravens (13-5) looked on in stunned horror.

Cundiff had no excuse.

"It's a kick I've kicked probably a thousand times in my career. I went out there and didn't convert. That's the way things go," Cundiff said.

"I just told him that it's going to be OK," added John Harbaugh, who in each of his four seasons as Ravens coach has led them to the playoffs, but never to the Super Bowl. "You know, we'll move on. He is a great kicker. You know, and everyone has a tough moment. All of us do, so Billy will be fine."

Baltimore appeared to be in fine shape after Flacco threw his second touchdown pass of the day.

Operating against a porous secondary missing its top cornerback, Kyle Arrington, who left in the second quarter with an eye injury, Flacco gave Baltimore its first lead. His short pass on third down to explosive receiver Torrey Smith turned into a 29-yard scamper down the right sideline after Moore completely whiffed on the tackle.

Danny Woodhead's fumble on the ensuing kickoff set up Baltimore at the Patriots 28, but a third-down sack forced Cundiff to kick a 39-yard field goal, making it 20-16.

Brady brought his team right back. He took the Patriots 63 yards in 11 plays, and seemed to score on a 1-yard run. The call was overruled by replay, though, and on fourth-down, he dived just high enough over the line for the winning points.

"Every inch counts in this game and every foot counts in this game," said 12-year veteran guard Brian Waters, who joined the Patriots this year and is headed to his first Super Bowl.

On his touchdown, Brady took a huge hit from Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis, then emphatically spiked the ball as he walked away. Earlier, Brady showed his fire by barking at Lewis following a hard tackle on a 4-yard run.

"It's a pretty mentally tough team," said Brady, whose fifth trip to the Super Bowl will equal John Elway's achievement with Denver. "There's really some resiliency. We've shown that all season. Even in the games we've lost, the three games we lost, we fought until the end. We're always going to fight to the end. It's great to be a part of a team like this."

Stephen Gostkowski's 28-yard field goal gave New England a 3-0 lead. Cundiff tied it with a 20-yarder, but BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran in from the 7 for a 10-3 lead after he drew a personal foul against Lardarius Webb, who ripped off the running back's helmet on a short rush. Green-Ellis pointed to the patch on his jersey honoring Myra Kraft, the late wife of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, after he scored.

In the locker room afterward, Kraft said he wasn't aware of Green-Ellis' gesture.

"They're an amazing team, they're a great brotherhood, they're a family," Kraft said.

Baltimore tied it on Flacco's 6-yard TD pass to Dennis Pitta before Gostkowski's 35-yard field goal made it 13-10. He also hit from 24 yards in the third quarter.

In the end, it came down to the Patriots making just enough big plays, and Cundiff's miss.

"It's definitely tough to be as close as we were to going to Indianapolis and not having it go our way," Flacco said.

Instead, it went New England's way.

"We stepped up," Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. "We all stepped up big time. Being in this situation is a great moment. You have to cherish this moment."

Notes: Brady won his 16th career postseason game to tie Joe Montana for most in NFL history. ... New England's seventh Super Bowl appearance puts it one behind Pittsburgh and Dallas. ... The Patriots are 7-1 in AFC title games, 4-0 at home. ... Brady and Belichick are the first QB-coach combination to win five conference championships in the Super Bowl era. ... Baltimore was 7-0 against playoff teams this season before Sunday's loss. ... The Ravens finished 4-5 on the road. ... In three career games against the Patriots, Rice averaged 145.7 yards, nearly double what he managed Sunday.

Exclusive: President Obama Dismisses Romney's Foreign Policy Attacks (Time.com)

President Obama dismissed Republican rival Mitt Romney's critiques of his foreign policy credentials Wednesday in an exclusive TIME interview, saying the GOP frontrunner's attacks are little more than primary posturing that will wither under the glare of "a serious debate."

"I think Mr. Romney and the rest of the Republican field are going to be playing to their base until the primary season is over," Obama told TIME's Fareed Zakaria during a White House interview that will appear in the next issue of TIME magazine. "Overall, I think it's going to be pretty hard to argue that we have not executed a strategy over the last three years that has put America in a stronger position than it was than when I came into office." (See Swampland's coverage of the 2012 election.)

In what sometimes sounded like a dry run of the Obama reelection campaign's foreign policy themes, the president drew sharp contrasts between himself and GOP leaders, past and present. He spoke with pride of accomplishing what he called a "pivot" from the policies of George W. Bush. This included ending the Iraq War, increasing pressure on Al Qaeda, rebuilding international alliances, and refocusing America's foreign policy goals.

"It's an American leadership that recognizes the rise of countries like China, India and Brazil," Obama said of his own policies. "It's a U.S. leadership that recognizes our limits in terms of resources and capacity. And yet, what I think we've been able to establish is a clear belief among other nations that the United States continues to be the one indispensible nation in tackling major international problems."

Obama also blamed Republicans in Congress for threatening to weaken America's international position by failing to agree to domestic policies that the White House has been advocating over the last year. "Our whole foreign policy has to be anchored in economic strength here at home," Obama said. "And if we are not strong, stable, growing, making stuff, training our work force so that it's the most skilled in the world, maintaining our lead in innovation, in basic research, in basic science, in the quality of our universities, in the transparency of our financial sector, if we don't maintain the upward mobility and equality of opportunity that underwrites our politically stability and makes us a beacon for the world, then our foreign policy leadership will diminish as well."

In particular, Obama praised the bipartisan fiscal commission, also known as Simpson-Bowles, for providing a clear and workable model for compromise, even if he disagreed on some of the specifics. He dismissed charges that he had abandoned the framework for his own agenda, and blamed Republicans for standing in the way. "The only reason it hasn't happened is because the Republicans were unwilling to do anything on revenue," Obama said. "Zero. Zip. Nada. The revenues that we were seeking were far less that what was in Simpson-Bowles. We've done more discretionary cuts than was called for in Simpson-Bowles."

"There's no equivalence between Democratic and Republican positions when it comes to deficit reduction," Obama continued. "If we can get any Republicans to show any serious commitment, not vague commitmentsnot we'll get revenues because of tax reform somewhere in the future, but we don't know exactly what that looks like, and we can't identify a single tax that we would allow to go up'but if we can get any of them, who are still in office as opposed to retired, to commit to that, we'll be able to reduce our deficit."(See "Obama's First Two Years: An Inside View.)

On the campaign trail, Romney has pointedly attacked Obama for carrying out "an appeasement strategy" that "apologizes for America." "He believes America's role as leader in the world is a thing of the past. I believe a strong America must and will lead the future," Romney said after winning the New Hampshire primary. SeveralRepublican candidates have argued that Obama does not embrace the notion of American exceptionalism.

In the interview, Obama pointedly dismissed that critique. "I think there is a strong belief that we continue to be a superpower unique perhaps in the annals of history that is not only self-interested but is also thinking about how to create a set of international rules and norms that everyone can follow, everyone can benefit from," Obama said.

The president did acknowledge that despite his foreign policy successes, not everything had gone according to plan. "We still have huge challenges ahead and one thing I've learned over the last three years is that as much as you'd like to guide events, stuff happens," Obama said. "And you have to respond, and those responses, no matter how effective your diplomacy or your foreign policy, are sometimes going to produce less than optimal results. But our overall trajectory, our overall strategy, has been very successful."

When asked about Romney's assertion that Iran would get a nuclear weapon if Obama won reelection, Obama responded directly. "I have made myself clear since I began running for the presidency that we will take every step available to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," he said. "Can we guarantee that Iran takes the smarter path? No, which is why I've repeatedly said we don't take any options off the table in preventing them from getting a nuclear weapon."

The interview will appear in the January 30 issue of TIME, which will be released online Thursday for all access subscribers.

Unlocking the mystery of Romney's 15 percent tax rate. Yes, it's legal.

Mitt Romney can pay a tax rate of 15 percent because his income, from investment firm Bain Capital, is structured as capital gains in the form of 'carried interest.' Here's how it works.

It may sound illegal; it may sound like a tax dodge. But Mitt Romney?s declared tax rate of about 15 percent, well below that of most Americans, is perfectly legal and accepted by the Internal Revenue Service.

How can that be?

Mr. Romney, who lists his wealth at as much as $250 million, still?receives much of his income from Bain Capital, a Boston investment firm that he helped found in 1984.

When Romney was working for Bain, he would have received his compensation in two ways: First, a fee charged to clients and taxed as regular income, amounting to 2 percent of the value of the assets under management. Then, Romney also would have received 20 percent or more of any gains in an investment as long as Bain?s profit exceeded a pre-set rate of return.

However, Romney and his Bain partners did not put up 20 percent of the capital ? that came from the firm?s clients,?other investors such as pensions. From their profits, the client investors pay the Bain partners in what is called ?carried interest,? which is taxed at the longterm capital gains rate of 15 percent.

What is carried interest?

It is simply a percentage of the profits of the underlying investment. Although it is unclear where the term comes from, Victor Fleischer, an associate professor of law at the University of Colorado, says one possible origin is from the oil and gas business where someone raising money to drill for oil did not put up much money but received a share of the income if oil was discovered. ?Their interest is carried by other investors,? explains Mr. Fleischer.

How does this work?

Bain Capital made a lot of investments in companies. If they bought one company for $100 million and sold it three years later for $200 million, they would have a $100 million capital gain. Out of that gain, Bain could have received as much as $20 million to $25 million, says Fleischer. Bain would then divide its share among the partners who worked on the purchase and sale. Perhaps Romney got $2 million even though he never invested much of his own money. In other words, his interest was carried by the other investors and he is taxed at the longterm capital gains rate for his share of their profits.

Is this widespread?

Fleischer says other well-to-do investors who use this method to get their money are real estate partnerships, oil-and-gas partnerships, and publicly traded investment partnerships. Although hedge-fund managers make large sums of money, much of this money is short-term capital gains, which is taxed at 35 percent.

The Joint Committee on Taxation has estimated that taxing carried interest as regular wage and salary income would generate about $21 billion in additional revenues over ten years.

Business leader: Newt was pretty keen on private equity firms two ...

posted at 2:30 pm on January 18, 2012 by Tina Korbe

However inconstant this quote makes Newt Gingrich appear in light of his recent criticisms of a private equity firm, it?s still refreshing somehow. He?s a capitalist at heart! Politico reports:

From?Bloomberg?TV comes a report that Paul Levy, a managing partner at private equity firm JLL Partners, says?Newt Gingrich?wasn?t ringing the bell against private equity a few years back.

?Newt Gingrich spoke at my annual meeting two years ago, we paid him $40,000, and this gentleman praised private equity more fulsomely than I could ever do it,? Levy said.? ?I can give you a copy of the check.? We paid to the Washington Speakers Bureau for Newt Gingrich to come and speak.? He was great.? He gave a great evening.? Everybody had fun.? He fielded a lot of questions.? He gave us a lot of time.?? But nobody praised private equity, risk taking, capital more fulsomely than Newt Gingrich.?

It?s not even that troubling that he said all of that in return for a speaker?s fee. As Gingrich says, ?Only the elites despise earning money.? In fact, considering that his attacks on Mitt Romney for his role at Bain Capital have largely backfired on Mr. Gingrich, he probably regrets that he hasn?t maintained the line he took two years ago.

Chris Lambton: Going Yard on HGTV!

By now, you've likely heard that Emily Maynard is The Bachelorette. Well, it turns out she's not the only big name from the ABC franchise getting a new gig.

The Bachelorette runner-up Chris Lambton, who turned down a chance to star as The Bachelor after Ali Fedotowsky turned him down, is getting his own show.

On HGTV. It's called Going Yard! Get it?! He's a landscaper!

Chris Lambton on The Bachelorette

In Going Yard, Lambton, the co-owner of his family landscaping company in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, will transform neglected backyards into spectacular spaces.

In each episode, he and his E. Lambton Landscaping team will trick out a homeowner's yard with such features as patios, arbors, water features and fire pits.

In addition, Lambton's fiance Peyton Wright (a fellow Bachelor album) will join the business, pitching in with design projects. Good for them is all we can say.

A fan favorite runner-up in season six of The Bachelorette, Chris Lambton was previously a math teacher and league championship-winning basketball coach.

"With his landscaping expertise and easygoing, approachable personality, Chris is an exciting addition to HGTV," said Kathleen Finch, HGTV general manager.

PFT: Tiki officially gives up comeback attempt

File photo of Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher in JacksonvilleReuters

The connection between new Rams coach Jeff Fisher, his agent Marvin Demoff, and Rams COO Kevin Demoff largely has been overlooked over the past two weeks.? We?ve pointed out the benefit to the Rams of having Kevin Demoff in position to trust the information he?s hearing from his father regarding the terms Fisher needed, and the terms the Dolphin were offering.? We?ve also observed that, in order for Kevin Demoff to escape scrutiny regarding the question of whether rolled over for his father and thus for Fisher, the Demoffs needed another team that would be offering similar bells and whistles to that which Fisher wanted.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who discloses that he?s also represented by Marvin Demoff (more NFL reporters and broadcasters should be willing to do the same regarding their own representation), writes in today?s Monday Morning Quarterback that King has heard in some circles an inference that ?the fix was in,? and that Marvin Demoff delivered Fisher to Demoff?s son.? King spoke with Fisher, who predictably but nevertheless credibly denied that he was steered to the Rams by Marvin Demoff, or by anyone.

?Under no circumstances at any time,? Fisher said.? ?I have 100 percent conviction on that.? This was my decision, and Marvin assisted me.? I was the one who decided.? No one pushed me anywhere.?

King also asked how the decision was made.? ?From day one, when I began this process after the season, I felt Miami and St. Louis were my best options,? Fisher said.? ?I did my research. I looked at every team that had an opening.? I looked at the personnel on each team, I looked at the owners, I looked at the cap situations, and I narrowed it to two.? Not Marvin.? Me.? Marvin didn?t push me.? I am convinced he was completely objective.?

Fisher?s response implies that more than two teams were chasing Fisher.? Still, when the time came to negotiate with the Rams, Fisher needed a second team in order to get the best deal possible from the Rams, without exposing Kevin Demoff to criticism for giving up too much to get his dad?s client.

King separately writes, contrary to reports from guys like Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports and Adam Schefter of ESPN, that Fisher didn?t want final say over the roster in either St. Louis or Miami.? ?All he wanted was the ability to ? in the event he was categorically opposed to a decision being made by the general manager ? have a mechanism in place for a third party, like an owner, to decide which way the team would go,? says King.

Apparently, Fisher wants to avoid a situation in which another Vince Young is shoved down Fisher?s throat.? But here?s the thing.? If Fisher wants the owner to settle any tie between Fisher and the G.M., it won?t save him from having a player taken against Fisher?s wishes if the owner wants to take that player.

After all, it was the owner in Tennessee who wanted to take Vince Young.

In the end, the Demoff connection helped St. Louis get Fisher.? But everyone knew about the Demoff connection going in; in the end, the Dolphins should have been far more vigilant about ensuring that they weren?t being served like potato salad at a father-son picnic.

Microsoft may have already signed patent licensing agreements with 70 percent of the US Android manufacturers, including some of the biggest names in the market, but that doesn't mean Redmond's about ready to hit the brakes anytime soon. Next up on the block is Pantech, according to a company spokesperson talking with Yonhap News. No specific details have been decided yet, so we'll have to wait for the official word and see what happens.

Analysis: Nigeria strife highlights Africa investment risks (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Nigeria's recent explosion of violent political unrest is damaging the economy and forcing investors to reassess their optimism over the short-term returns available there and elsewhere in Africa.

Stock and bond investors started looking seriously at sub-Saharan Africa after 2005 when debt forgiveness deals paved the way for growth and reform across the continent. But anyone seeking a killing from the hottest investment pitch of the time will have been disappointed.

Frontier market investors pumped $1.3 billion into African equity funds in 2010 excluding South Africa, EPFR says, up 10-fold from 2005. Such markets are a rung below emerging markets in terms of liquidity, size and transparency, but promise strong returns.

Asset managers Renaissance estimate Nigeria -- two-thirds of MSCI's frontier Africa equity index and almost a tenth of the broader frontier index -- took in half this amount, boosted by deep banking reforms and smooth 2011 elections expected to unleash infrastructure improvements.

The country was also included by Goldman Sachs in a group of eleven most promising emerging economies after the BRICs.

Yet a dollar invested five years ago in MSCI's Africa frontier equity index, comprising Nigeria, Kenya, Mauritius and Tunisia, would have lost 23 cents, Thomson Reuters data shows. In Nigeria, the loss is 36 cents. An investor in mainstream emerging equities would have made a 22 cent profit.

"If you go back to 2006 expectations of frontier markets were very very high, that's the difference between then and now," said Andrew Brudenell, who helps manage $180 million in frontier stocks at HSBC Global Asset Management. "What you have now are very low expectations and very low valuations."

In Nigeria, key reforms to unlock the economy's potential, have been slow, with this month's removal of the $8 billion petrol subsidy the first major step since President Goodluck Jonathan took office last April.

Worse, recent bombings directed at Christians followed by strikes against the ending of fuel subsidies, have shattered a fragile veneer of stability, with the strikes estimated to have cost sub-Saharan Africa's second-largest economy more than $600 million a day.

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka even predicts the nation is headed for civil war.

After last year's debt default in Ivory Coast, Tunisia's turmoil and currency collapses in Kenya and Uganda, such developments revive Africa's reputation as a high-risk play for only the most adventurous investors.

"In the current risk off environment, frontier markets are not a short-term story," said Maria Gratsova, an analyst at Citi. "They are small and illiquid and that's not a good place to be when markets are extremely volatile as in past years."

Gratsova is worried by Nigeria's increasingly violent sectarianism but remains bullish on it and most frontier markets, saying the woes are reflected in stock valuations some 20 percent below those of emerging markets.

"At this price you are getting access to population growth and GDP growth. It's not a high price to pay," Gratsova said.

RISKS IN THE PRICE

There is no guarantee that faster growth will lead to better equity performance -- stocks in India and China have done poorly in recent years despite rapid growth rates.

But many argue Africa's risks are already in the price. Shares trade at an average price-earnings ratio of 7 times or less, versus over 9 times for emerging markets, says Sven Richter, head of frontier markets at Renaissance Asset Managers.

"That's a significant risk premium," Richter says. "I don't expect Africa to be valued on par with emerging markets but over time this premium will reduce. A PE (ratio) of 10 will still capture some risk premium."

Local African bonds also carry a bigger yield premium to hard currency counterparts than is common elsewhere. Daniel Broby, CIO at Silk Invest, a frontier markets focused fund, says the pickup is 200-300 basis points or more.

Ghana's 10-year dollar bond for instance yields 6.5 percent, while 10-year cedi-denominated debt pays over 15 percent.

"Political risk is part of the scenario in Africa but the risk is mispriced," Broby says, noting that events in one country do not tend to have a fallout elsewhere.

Buyers of African dollar debt haven't fared too badly. Nigeria's sovereign bonds returned 5 percent last year and has barely budged despite the turmoil. Bonds from the Republic of Congo and Seychelles returned 14-16 percent in 2011.

LONG TERM

Investors insist long-term returns will be worth the pain. Incomes are rising across Africa, implying poor penetration levels for all goods and services from telecoms to transport, will rise if reforms work.

Up to 40 percent of Nigerian firms' costs come from running power generators to cover for electricity shortages, analysts say, a bottleneck which could be addressed were fuel subsidies redirected into power infrastructure.

And even within poorly performing markets, there are gains to be won. Brudenell of HSBC for instance invested in consumer staples such as Guinness Nigeria which rose 18 percent last year, bucking an index loss of 24 percent.

"That shows there are some very good quality companies in frontier markets that are doing well in balance sheet and cash generation point of view," he said.

Fox's song-and-dance series "Glee" is no stranger to a star-studded cameo or two, with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos and Kristin Chenoweth all walking the halls of McKinley High during the past two and a half seasons. And as the show returns from a month-long hiatus, Gleeks aren't the only ones anticipating a few more famous faces. As star Chris Colfer told MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet, there's plenty to look forward to when New Directions warble again January 17. "Well, the Michael Jackson episode ...," Colfer answered when asked about his most-anticipated upcoming episodes. "We have a Spanish episode coming up with Ricky Martin. We have a Valentine's Day episode coming up, so that's going to be fun."

Martin is slated to play "the hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio," according to TVLine. The actor/singer recently tweeted a joyful picture from his first day on set. As to how the King of Pop's prolific songbook will manifest itself in the January 31 tribute episode, Colfer explained, "Well, I sing part of 'Black [or] White.' I'm the 'White' in 'Black [or] White,' and I sing 'Ben,' that famous song he wrote for the rat." The rodent in question is the pet of a young boy named Danny in the 1972 film "Ben." Jackson sang a version of the theme song that appeared in the movie's closing credits and was later included on his 1972 album also named Ben. The track "Black or White" was the first single off of Jackson's 1991 album Dangerous. Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Golden Globes winners, and don't miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet!
