WWE takes a jab at ?The Ultimate Fighter?s? plummeting ratings

The ratings for the 16th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" have plummeted from their very low debut. Last Friday was the lowest-rated show in TUF history, and the people over at WWE couldn't help but take a shot at the UFC.

Ouch. Though it's a petty shot to take, it shows that others are noticing how the show is faltering. The debut was the lowest-rated in TUF history with 947,000 viewers, and has dropped down to 775,000. It's just not catching on with fans.

Still, UFC president Dana White told "The Ultimate Insider" this isn't a make-or-break season.

"There are some things that we all did wrong. And we need to fix them. It's all part of running a business. The thing about us is we're not afraid of taking risks. If we were, we wouldn't be sitting here right now. This whole business has been a risk since day one."

While that's effective spin on White's part, it didn't really address that people just aren't tuning into the show the way they used to. With so many fights available throughout the month and the feeling that every season is just like the one before, there isn't as much of a need to watch the show for a fight fix.

Thanks, MMA Fighting.

Russian court adjourns punk band appeal hearing

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian court on Monday adjourned an appeal hearing for three members of the Pussy Riot punk band against their conviction for a protest against President Vladimir Putin in a church after one of the trio sacked her lawyers.

About a hundred people - Pussy Riot supporters in colourful T-shirts as well as mainly elderly Russian Orthodox Christians - filled corridors of the Moscow court and others stood outside.

Pussy Riot supporters released three large balloons - a red, blue and a yellow one, all with captions reading "Pussy Riot!" - into the sky, while one Orthodox campaigner held up a banner declaring: "Shame to lawyers, prison for blasphemers".

one of the band, Yekaterina Samutsevich, sitting in a glass and metal courtroom cage alongside her two band mates, told the Moscow court she disagreed with her lawyers' handling of the case and the hearing was put off until October 10.

"My position on the criminal case does not match their (the lawyers') position," Tolokonnikova told the small courtroom, packed with supporters, family members and reporters. She gave no details.

Western governments have portrayed the three women's two-year sentences as excessive, and opposition groups see it as part of a crackdown on dissent by Putin, but many Russians regard the protest band as irreverent self-publicists.

Samutsevich, 30, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Maria Alyokhina, 24, in August were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after storming into the Christ the Saviour Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Moscow in February and belting out a "punk prayer" asking the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin.

Mark Feigin, one of three defense lawyers, said he had learned about Samutsevich's decision only at the weekend and that it could weaken the three women's defense line in a case they say is politically motivated.

"The pressure is not subsiding. It continues and it would be naive to think that the authorities will just let it go," said another defense lawyer, Nikolai Polozov.

"From various sides they are trying to weaken their position. They have the line of not admitting guilt, and consider that they have committed only an administrative offence," he added. "The authorities don't like that."

CASE DIVIDES RUSSIANS

Global celebrities, including British musician Paul McCartney and U.S. pop singer Madonna, called for leniency for the women before their verdict on Aug 17.

But their two-year sentences were seen by the opposition, and by some Western governments, as part of increasingly aggressive tactics against the opposition following the biggest protests of Putin's 12-year rule of Russia.

Since Putin's return to the Kremlin in May for a six-year term, parliament has expelled an opposition leader and approved laws raising fines for protesters, stiffening punishment for defamation and tightening checks on foreign-funded lobby groups.

Another bill under consideration in parliament, where Putin's United Russia has a majority, would institute jail terms of up to three years for offending religious feelings.

Vladimir Legoida, a senior church spokesman, said on Sunday the trio's stunt "must not remain unpunished whatever the justification," but urged them to repent.

A pardon or a reduced sentence would require the women to admit guilt but they have refused to do so.

The band members say their protest near the altar, in bright ski masks, tights and short skirts, was not intended to offend believers and was motivated by anger over Putin's closeness to Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

A recent official opinion poll showed that more than half of Russians are critical of what Pussy Riot did and consider their two-year jail sentence to be a just one, with less than a third saying the opposite.

Many Russian Orthodox believers consider Christ the Saviour one of the most revered holy sites in the country, where religion has flourished since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and considered the protest a sacrilege.

Orioles' plane diverted because of smoke in galley

The airplane taking the Baltimore Orioles to St. Petersburg, Fla. on Sunday night had its flight diverted to Jacksonville because of smoke in the forward galley.

Michael Stewart, spokesman for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, told The Associated Press that the plane was inspected and deemed OK to fly. The Orioles resumed their trip on the same aircraft, leaving Jacksonville International Airport at 10:15 p.m.

Stewart said the plane was a Delta charter with more than 90 people aboard.

Baltimore, tied with New York for first place in the AL East, opens a series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

In a statement, the Orioles said, "Due to a minor incident in the galley, the Orioles' charter made an unscheduled landing in Jacksonville, Florida en route to St. Petersburg tonight. After the plane was inspected, all crew and passengers re-boarded and flew to St. Petersburg without further incident. This unscheduled landing was done with an abundance of caution and at no time was anyone on the flight in danger."

After the team touched down in St. Petersburg, manager Buck Showalter said during a telephone conference call, "We were in good hands. It was just a precautionary thing just to be on the safe side."

He added, "We had a little something heat up on the plane, and the professionals didn't like what was going on. So just to check it out and be on the safe side, we stopped in Jacksonville. We fixed whatever the problem was, got back on the plane and took off.

"It gave everyone a chance to watch some of the Eagles (football) game, so it worked out good."

The Orioles beat Boston 6-3 in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. Baltimore later clinched a playoff spot when the Los Angeles Angels lost at Texas in the second game of a doubleheader.

Tattle tell or justified reporting?

So I just need your take on this, I'm pretty sure I'm going to call the social worker anyways just because it bothers my husband so much. So Giggles has been having trouble and waking up in the middle of the night (well about 3 am) and she runs screaming through the house. So I called her previous foster parents/hopefully soon to be adoptive parents and asked them for some advice. Her response? Oh yeah, we just put the lock on the outside of the door. I'd put her to bed at 7:30 and lock it and go get her when I woke up at 7. Um what? First off I though it was against the rules to put the lock on the outside of the door. Second I'm certain its not alright to lock a 2 year old in a room and let her scream herself to sleep and not check on her until you feel like waking up. I'm pretty sure this is a reporting to case worker type of thing I just don't want her to be annoyed and think I'm a tattle tell. Opinions?
