Astrid Integrates with Your Gmail, Turns Your Email into To-Dos

Astrid Integrates with Your Gmail, Turns Your Email into To-Dos Chrome: Astrid is your favorite to-do list manager, and now it integrates with your favorite email service. The Astrid Chrome extension now brings your to-dos into Gmail, and makes it simple to add any email as a to-do item on your list, or just manage your to-dos without ever leaving Gmail's interface.

Astrid's Chrome extension has been around for a while, and adds a button to your toolbar to quickly manage your Astrid to-dos, but the latest version also integrates Astrid with Gmail. If you're a fan of Google Tasks?or rather, you use it just because it's integrated with Gmail, this Chrome extension does pretty much the same thing.

Once installed, your Astrid tasks will be available via the Mail drop-down menu, where you can view, manage, add, or mark any item complete on your list. The add-on also lets you manage multiple lists at the same time, navigate lists, and create new ones right inside Gmail. Turn on "manual order" to get Google Tasks' drag-and-drop ordering, so you can move your to-do items around just by dragging them up or down in the list.

Astrid Integrates with Your Gmail, Turns Your Email into To-Dos Additionally, the extension adds a button to the Gmail toolbar you'll see when viewing an email labeled "Remind Me," which effectively turns that email into an item on your to-do list. This way if your boss emails you asking for an update by Friday, or your spouse asks you to pick up some bread on the way home, one click turns that email into an item on your to-do list, with the subject of the email as the text of the to-do. You can grab the extension at the link below, or head over to the Astrid blog to read more.

Apple CEO to be Obama's State of the Union guest

Apple CEO TIm Cook will sit with the First Lady in special box seats at the State of the Union address on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Cook will sit with the First Lady in special box seats, said a source with knowledge of the matter. The First Lady's other guests at the 2013 State of the Union include the parents of Hadiya Pendleton, the 15-year-old girl shot and killed in Chicago last month. Monday's Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha will also be Obama's guest.

The First Lady has a history of inviting tech leaders to the annual event. Last year's special guests included Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of late Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) co-founder Steve Jobs, and Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger. Instagram sold itself to Facebook (FB) two months later.

Tuesday will be a busy day for Cook. At 10:15 a.m ET, he will speak at Goldman Sachs' Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, where he's likely to face tough questions. Apple shares have lost nearly a third of their value over the past five months.

Cook will also likely address activist investor David Einhorn at the conference, who publicly called for Apple to give some of its $137 billion cash hoard to back to shareholders in the form of preferred stock. Apple surprised industry watchers by replying with a statement, saying the company "will thoroughly evaluate" Einhorn's proposal.

Obama moves to elevate status of Army in Pacific

HONOLULU (AP) ? The Obama administration is moving to elevate the status of the general who leads soldiers in the Pacific to four stars.

U.S. Army Pacific has been led by a three-star general for years.

The Pentagon said Monday that President Barack Obama is nominating Third Army commander Lt. Gen. Vincent Brooks to become the new Army Pacific commander and for a promotion to four stars.

Putting a four-star general in charge of U.S. soldiers in the Pacific would put the Army on par with the Navy and Air Force in the region. Both services are led by four-star commanders in the Pacific.

Brooks currently leads soldiers in the U.S. Central Command area.

Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski, the current U.S. Army Pacific commander, plans to retire after 34 years of service.

(AP) ? Six contestants have braved butt-numbing cold and boredom to win an annual ice pole-sitting contest in northern Sweden.

Two women and four men shared the 20,000-kronor prize ($3,100) for remaining on 8.25-foot-tall (2.5-meter) blocks of ice during the 48-hour contest, which ended Saturday.

Competitors said the worst part of the competition was not the cold ? temperatures dipped below -18 F (-28 C) ? but the monotony, even though they were allowed to come down for 10-minute toilet breaks every other hour.

Organizer Annica Andersson said the contest has been held annually for a dozen years, and was brought to the Swedish town of Vilhelmnina by a local resident who had participated in a similar competition in Russia.
