Japanese artist sculpts space with sound and light (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? A blindingly white room filled with a single wave of sound contrasts with a dark room that is pierced by a cone of light in the first German solo exhibition of Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda.

Ikeda, known for his electronic sound compositions and audiovisual installations, created the works specifically for the two vast symmetrical upper halls of Berlin's contemporary art museum, the Hamburger Bahnhof.

The exhibition's title "db" (decibel abbreviated) refers to this symmetry and to the polar opposites such as bright and dark, full and empty, that fascinate him and run throughout his artwork.

"You can't see music or touch the light, but it fills the whole space," he told Reuters in an interview. "I made the space extreme, to open you up."

Ikeda, 45, frequently explores how to sculpt space with sound and light in his work and talks of his "architectural" projects. In Paris and Barcelona, for example, he has projected clusters of light beams into the sky, like skyscrapers of luminosity.

Ikeda's installations appear minimalist, with the objects --a loudspeaker and a searchlight-- taking up only a fraction of the vast space. Each hall comprises 700 square meters.

Yet the artist calls them "maximalist" as the intense shows of light and sound fill and transform the entire space, blending out all else and engulfing the spectator.

"The big speaker emits just one tone but it fills the space and this sound seems to come from all directions," he said, referring to the white room. "As you move through the space, you create an oscillation in the sound, your own music."

Similarly, he said, the white light in the black room is very strong and "contains full information," namely all the colors in the spectrum.

SUBLIME INFINITY

Ikeda refuses to be photographed and rarely gives interviews, preferring to let his art speak for itself.

The artist, dressed in dark clothing and wearing thick, black-rimmed glasses, said this dislike of publicity could stem from his upbringing in Japan, where people are required to conform and to be self-effacing.

Ikeda said he does not want museum-goers to come to his works of art with preconceptions and seek to understand them rationally but to experience them emotionally.

"An exhibition should be like a concert, it is a live performance," said Ikeda, who now lives in Paris with his French wife and their child. "When you go to a concert, you don't ask about the meaning of Mozart, you enjoy the experience."

However, he said he included some "seeds for thought for the intellectual people which are very mathematical."

In the white room, irreducible numbers of more than one million digits each are written in tiny print on black canvases. In the black room, transcendental - infinite - numbers generated by real-time computer programs flicker on wall displays.

"The cutting edge of pure mathematics is truly amazing, the discussion is all about infinity," said Ikeda, who draws from mathematics in many of his works. "It's the most powerful concept around."

Of his projection of infinite numbers, he said: "You are watching something your brain cannot handle, it is sublime, beyond beautiful, you get scared."

"It's like the climax when Jimi Hendrix plays the guitar, I want to extend that climax for two months."

Ikeda, who dropped out of university, said he had now overcome his dislike of the establishment to visit mathematicians at the universities of Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge.

He said his decade touring with Japanese artist collective "Dumb Type" had taught him the craftwork involved in the arts, but mathematicians give him inspiration, and he now counts them among his closest friends.

"Mathematicians are so free, they are like poets."

Santorum, Paul looks past Nevada caucuses (AP)

MONTROSE, Colo. ? Republican Rick Santorum said Saturday he wants to "endanger" rival Newt Gingrich while presidential rival Ron Paul claimed "the American people are waking up," both campaigning outside Nevada as that state began its GOP caucuses.

Santorum and Paul both looked beyond Nevada's causes and eyed contests further down the nominating calendar, signaling the results were unlikely to change their strategy in a race that seemed to have become a two-man contest between Mitt Romney and Gingrich.

In recent days Santorum has sharpened his criticism of Gingrich, whose fortunes seemed to be falling as he headed toward another setback in Nevada with no obvious state coming up for him to regain his footing. Santorum's strategy has been to outlast Gingrich and emerge as the eventual alternative to frontrunner Mitt Romney.

Opening his day, Santorum told Republicans on Colorado's Western Slope that Washington has gone too far in its environmental policies, especially here in the West. He said over-reaching environmental regulators were trampling on ranchers with a Washington-knows-best approach.

"`We'll make sure that you don't do something to scar the land or endanger a newt,'" Santorum said. "No, not that Newt. I want to endanger that Newt. That's a different story."

Santorum has increased his attacks on Gingrich in recent weeks, piggybacking on criticism from Romney's allies. Gingrich, for his part, dug in like Santorum and Paul and offered no signs the results of Saturday's caucuses in Nevada would push any of them to exit.

Santorum, declared the winner of Iowa's leadoff caucuses last month but likely to face a fourth consecutive loss Saturday in Nevada, planned to head from Colorado to Minnesota for a busy day on Sunday.

Paul, too, was campaigning in Minnesota, another state that meets Tuesday for the latest round of GOP contests that seem to shuffle the race on a regular basis.

Speaking before a few hundred people at a Rochester high school, Paul said his economic ideas are penetrating and a strong showing in Minnesota and other upcoming states will send a strong signal that Americans are fed up with tepid change and government as it is.

"The one thing that is on our side is the American people are waking up," he said in a speech frequently interrupted by applause and standing ovations.

Yet Paul was keeping close tabs on Nevada, where he placed second in 2008 behind Romney. The Texas congressman is hoping for an outright win this time. Advisers believe the state's independent, live-and-let-live ethos is receptive to Paul's libertarian message and that his band of diehard supporters can be counted on to show up at the caucuses.

Paul's campaign has spent $350,000 on television ads in Nevada, just behind Romney who's spent $371,000, according to the Smart Media Group which tracks political advertising. Newt Gingrich's campaign did not advertise at all on television in Nevada and Santorum placed only a $12,000 cable buy.

Aboard Santorum's plane en route to Denver, the former senator got his first results from the hometown of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"We're tied with Romney in Searchlight, Nevada. That may be the highlight of our day," Santorum told reporters as his plane landed in Denver. "Please, emphasize `may.'"

Santorum told Republicans on the Western Slope that Colorado was "a wide-open state" and urged voters to support him in Tuesday's upcoming contest.

"This isn't a state where someone has a natural advantage," Santorum said in Montrose, before flying on to events in Loveland and Greeley. "No one can stake a claim and say, `He's going to win this state.' This is a wide-open race and you have an opportunity to reset this race."

Santorum has vowed to continue his race until the Republicans meet in Tampa for their nominating contest, and Paul has shown no interest in shutting down his libertarian-leaning campaign that still draws enthusiastic crowds of fervent supporters.

Romney and Gingrich, meanwhile, were fighting in Nevada for the first contest in the West. The tone of the campaign had turned caustic in recent days, all the while Santorum built giant crowds. He spent Friday in Missouri, which has also has a primary Tuesday that lacks Gingrich's name on the ballot and does not award delegates.

Santorum also sought to undercut Romney's argument he is most electable because he has the most money and strongest organization. Santorum, who raised $1 million online in recent days, said no one will be able to go tit-for-tat with President Barack Obama.

"Folks, he's not going to have the most money in the general election," he said. "Barack Obama's going to have more money. .... (Romney) is going to be outspent badly. Any Republican will be."

My Top 10 Romantic Movies | American Mothers S. A. | a mySA.com ...

Movies about love are very popular because everyone has the desire to feel loved. ?However, many movies depict sensuality and not true love. ?Even when they depict love, there is often too much sensuality. ?I?ve compiled a list of my favorite romantic movies. ?The conflict in many of them is built around the obstacles to love rather than the flowering of love over time. ?Two are set in World War II Germany and one of these is rated R because of its depiction of a concentration camp. ?I included While You Were Sleeping instead of Far and Away because it?s less racy but probably Far and Away is more romantic. ?So, this list is intended to be one that does not include movies with graphic depictions of sex instead of romance. ?Love is a classic theme and one that hasn?t fully been explored just as in life the meaning of our most precious relationships continues to elude us.

Tech moves still life painting

Scott Garner

Artist Scott Garner's Still Life project uses technology similar to that found in today's smartphones to bring a traditional painting to life.

By John Roach

Life isn't still. Paintings don't have to be either. And now, thanks to Seattle-based artist Scott Garner, still life art is catching up with the times.

He's created an interactive gallery piece called Still Life that comes to life when tilted: the vase tips over, fruit rolls off plates and across the table, the fruit stand tumbles.

"It is about the role of technology in our lives and finding ways to switch our perspective on it a little bit," Garner told me Tuesday.

The installation consists of a traditional still life scene ? a set table with fruit, plates, and an ornamental vase ? presented on a flat screen TV that Garner wrapped in a traditional wooden frame.

"In any digital project, I try to find some source for more traditional craft," he noted.

This framed TV is hung on a rotating mount so that it swivels from side to side. A motion sensor is hooked to the back of the TV. As the screen moves, the tilt data is fed into a computer.

The computer, in turn, runs a video game engine from Unity 3D that Garner programmed so that it moves all the objects in?the digital scene as they would in real life.

He created Still Life while an intern at superfad, a brand driven design and production company. Garner is now packing his bags to travel around before starting graduate school in digital art next year.

Where he's going is undecided, but wherever he ends up, he'll likely cast technology in new ways.

"We have amazing technology like smartphones with touch screens and accelerometers and voice recognition and all of these things, but basically you are still using it like a bunch of analog buttons," he said.

"One of the things I'm really interested in is finding ways around that, in addition to just general creative exploration."
